Mutatis Mutandis requires application for all characters. This is to
ensure that all persons
awarded characters are familiar with the characters
they wish to play; that the character concept is well thought out and
consistent within itself; that the powers are logical to an extent and
make sense; that the limitations, weaknesses and strengths of the
character are clearly delineated; and the interpretation of the
character that can be expected. Reasons for this also include maintaining
game balance and seeing how the character will fit into the MUX as a
whole. What follows below is information about applying, the application,
how it works, and some tips. Additional information can be found online
in the news files.
The very first thing you should do is decide who you might want to play (and
it might be a good idea to have a few alternate choices in case your first
choice is already taken), and then find out if this choice is taken. Note that
although a character may appear available, applications may have been
submitted for the character. You can always ask a Wizard whether there is a
pending application for a particular Feature Character. It is also important
to be aware that we do not work on a strict first come first served basis. If
an application is received for the same Feature Character (or post cut-off FC)
before the first application is processed completely, any additional
applications for that character will be accepted. We are not doing this to
promote competition or lessen the enjoyability of the game, we are doing this
to make the game better by trying to get the best person for the job at that
particular moment.
Completely and thoroughly fill out the application, answering ALL of the
required parts. Incomplete applications might be rejected simply for
incompleteness, so to speed along the process it behooves you to be complete
the first time around.
Do keep the numbering the same as it appears on the application and number the
sections. Keep in mind that we will have a large number of applications to
read through and the easier you can make our work for us, the less we will
have to be critical of minor details like organization. Feel free to contact
continuity staff during this process if you have any questions. It is
imperative that your application fit into current continuity. It is also
better to include something if you are uncertain whether a piece of
information is needed.
Another thing that is imperative is that you are as THOROUGH as possible in
describing powers, skills, technology, and spells. Thing such as range,
duration, affect, degree of difficulty for the character, power stunts, degree
of mastery, and the like, should all be present in each description.
Submit your completed application to gryffon@mserv1.sgeinc.com. Once you have
submitted your application, you -should- receive email to verify our receival
of your application. If you do not receive this verification within 3 days,
only then feel free to enquire with Staff to determine if the application has
been received. Note that this is just the email that informs you we have
received your application, this is not your final application result.
Once you are certain that your application has been received, do not ask the
wizards or staff about the status of your applications. This will most
definitely not endear you to us. Applications are judged on a continuous
basis, and, real life permitting, you will receive a response within a week's
time. If for some reason you have not, only then should you ask after your
application status. Keeping real life disruptions in mind, you would do well
to really wait at least ten days before asking.
If your application passes written review, then you will be scheduled for an
interview. The successful applicant will be selected from those who pass the
interview stage successfully. Characters will be awarded to the first and best
successful applicant. You will be notified either way, and if successful you
will receive a password via email.
If your application is declined, please accept this gracefully and do not take
it personally. Griping about a declined application is a good way to get
declined again. Feel free to ask for the reasons, however, that the
application was turned down if you feel that the reply you receive is
inadequate. Keep in mind that it is a privilege to play here and not a right.
Note that it is likely you will be required to re-write the application at
least once. Although we do indeed have characters approved on the first draft
of an application (believe it or don't :) the average for rewrites is one per
character. By no means should you feel daunted by being asked to re-write an
application. In most cases it is simply that details were omitted and it was
too much to cover in an interview.
If you are asked to re-write and the comments you receive are unclear, feel
free to log in and ask a Wizard about it. We do what we can to provide as
thorough comments as we can.
Once your written application is down to a minimum of questions or comments,
it goes to interview. During the interview, we ask questions about the
character if there are any details needing clarification. When there is time,
there is also a short IC section of roleplay. Note that we try to keep
interviews under an hour's time, and so clearing many of these questions up
ahead of time in a re-write is often easier than a long and drawn out
interview.
At the end of the interview, you will get notification via e-mail, usually
within a day.
