Features of Mutatis Mutandis MUX

Jean Grey Picture It was a dark and stormy night when something nifty this way shuffled in a sleepy and confused manner. After much confused and placid contemplation, a strange happening did enter into existence. Someone had an idea. After a whole lot of work and even more thought, the idea germinated and sprouted and ate a few pesky children. Now well fed, the idea spread and spread twining within and without itself to form a labyrinth of byways. And in the beginning, Mutatis Mutandis was formed.

But whoopty do, big deal. Oh joy, it's just another X-Mush, another MUX, another MU*, right? Nope, Mutatis Mutandis is Latin for 'with the necessary changes', and we take that to heart. It's the opinion of the Wizcorps of Mutatis Mutandis Mux that our efforts to do things differently have born fruit that is both succulent and sweet.

The heart of MMMUX is the Wizcorps and their efforts to do things to the best of their ability. Most of the Wizards have been in adminstrative roles elsewhere and have ideas about what could and should be done differently when running a MU*. Our administrative structure differs from that of most other MU*s. We feel that this is one of our greatest strengths. The varied backgrounds of the Wizards themselves play off against each other so that an atmosphere of respect and openness prevails. Each and every one of the Wizards freely admits that they are not the be all and end all authority on everything. This is a good thing.

As a group we have put a lot of effort into getting the MUX to where it is now, and planning to help it along to where it needs to be in the future. Listed below are some of the things that we feel are worth jumping up and down about.

We are also very much interested in feedback, in hearing your comments both good and bad, and would like to know if you have any particular suggestions or concerns.

X Bullet Underlying MUX Premise
The underlying premise of the MUX, picking up after the X-Men went through the Siege Perilous and not allowing the Siege to be destroyed, allows for creative interpretation of Feature Characters that end up passing through the Siege if so desired, and hopefully a departure from the standard X-continuity online and in the comics.

We also still have the threat of Genosha and the Mutant Registration Act to provide a constant backdrop of tension which can fluctuate in intensity.

X Bullet Non-Feature Characters
MMM has been accused of being an NFC Mux, and in comparison to many other MU*s, this is indeed true. In the minds of the Wizcorps, a Non-Feature Character is equally as important and equally as desirable as a Feature Character. We have no limit on how many NFC characters a player can have. Instead, our policy limits the number of total characters a player might have simply based on power levels.

We acknowledge that not everyone is familiar with the X-Books nor can afford to be familiar around our chosen timeline. This leads to an impasse in many situations; either you know about the timeline and can choose a Feature Character, or you do not know, and you are left out in the cold. However, at MMM, we simply demand the same level of rigor from all applications to ensure that things incorporate into the game as smoothly as possible, and we give equal weight to features and non-features, and handle feature and non-feature applications in the same way.

X Bullet The MUX IC World
We have an incredibly large gameworld to explore. Along with New York City, Westchester, and the New York Underground, we also have completed London, Muir Island, Excalibur's Lighthouse; Boston, Snow Valley, and the Massachusetts Academy; Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area; Madripoor, the Reavers' Base, the Savage Lands and Asteroid M. There is also an extensive IC flight system that accesses every area of the MUX. Anywhere that is IC can be reached through IC means. Other areas in progress include Genosha, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, and the Blue Area on the Moon, and we're always willing to expand the world as interest arises.

X Bullet Softcoded Features
Softcoded features consist of all the code "added on" to the basic TinyMUX code. These are all the commands and features that you see when you type +help on the MUX. Features that are implemented include global multi-descing; softcoded empathy; flight; languages; magic; phasing; shapeshifting; telepathy, including mindlinks and an extensive astral projection system; teleportation; IC character histories; and a rating system. There's even an online spell-checker, along with lots of fairly 'standard' types of commands, including Bulletin Boards, Places, Mutter... heck, there's so much to list, just go look at the commands yourself.

Again, we are always open to more ideas that can be coded and incorporated to the MUX as a whole.

X Bullet Character Definition
We have a thorough system for defining characters to try to minimize the amount of confusion that can arise during the course of play. Although this tends to make the application process itself a little longer, it does certainly make the game easier to play in the long run and it also helps to keep the game self-referential. Anyone can play because all the information needed is right there.

X Bullet Detailed Documentation
The news files and +help files contain an incredible amount of information and provide the answer to almost any question that might need be answered to play on the MUX. If you think of a question with no answer readily available, ask a Staff person or Wizard. Don't be shy either, if someone is onduty, because we're there to help, and we know the answers aren't always available without asking.

X Bullet Roleplay Environment
We support and seek to engender an environment for roleplay for responsible individuals to creatively play their characters. This includes such things as players not being canon cops, players departing from the norm to try something different with a feature or non-feature character.

X Bullet Mutatis Mutandis
The name is more than a catchy phrase to us at Mutatis Mutandis. Saying it is a way of life is too corny, but the theme of making the necessary changes recurs throughout the MUX in IC (In Character) and OOC (Out of Character) fashion. In other words, when change is required, we change. If something is wrong, we fix it. If there is a new direction or avenue that we could explore to enhance and enrich the MUX as a whole, we take it -- whether it is in MUX Administration, Code, Building, Roleplay. Things will always be changing, some subtle and some not-so-subtle. The saying goes, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Well, we'd like to fix it even if it isn't "broke", because to us, innovation is more valuable than certainty. Change, Mutate, Adapt -- or Die. Catchy phrase, no?

X Bullet Hey! We're a MUX
We're running on TinyMUX 1.4 patchlevel 5.

Why are we a MUX? Some of the most obvious features we get being a MUX are hardcoded @mail, ansi color, channels, +helps, built in multi-paging and pages remembering who you last paged, and lots of nifty functions that make possible a lot of the things listed in the soft coded features section above.

X Bullet Look at these Spiffy Pages!
We've put a lot of work into these pages to make them as good a representation of the MUX as we possibly could. One thing we can't brag enough about are the images used on these pages, all of which are originals, either painted or designed for MMM. Now that these pages are done we can see about doing some pages for the painter herself so you can see more of her work. The computer images were painstakingly crafted for us by Slyder.
